Hero

Hero is a pretty decent movie. It was a nice little dose of Chinese history on a Saturday night. It talks about the Qin kingdom before it takes over the other kingdoms to unify China.

The movie is in Mandarin, which is really bad for non-Mandarin understanding audience members. A lot of it is lost in the translation. The plot itself is a bit confusing too, because of multiple versions presented. Here's a hint: the final version is what actually happened.

How many engineers does it take to change a tire?

Friday

It's Friday of the first week of classes. Classes are coming along just fine, and the first week is almost over.

It's really humid. Today's forecast predicts a high of 87. The humidity right now is 87%. It's not as bad as yesterday, though; when I woke up, it was reported to be 100%.

I just checked my other email account, and I got 38 new messages. Wow. Probably most of it is spam.

What happened was I was in Sean & Rick's room, and Rick just got back from Boiler Crossing. He tosses his bag of goodies on his chair, and takes some forms to go turn in to Rob. I told Sean the Rick would probably come back in and plop down on his chair, forgetting that his stuff was there. lol.:laugh:

Google Rankings

I'm ranked #2 for "anomaly concept" now. I used to hold #1 before Danwa went down, and had #1 and #3 after I got this site running again. The #1 spot in that case was my Purdue web space, when I uploaded the template there temporarily. I think it's just a matter of time before I reclaim my #1 spot. The #2 listing doesn't even have "anomaly concept" as a phrase.

Exodus

I think I'm mostly packed. I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Purdue. Hope everyone had a good summer, and if not, hope you have a good one next year.

I will try to get Vectorspace in a working fashion sometime before September. I think I'm going to edit Project Valence quite a bit; I'm not satisfied with some of the functions. I think it was rushed a bit towards the end.

You know, this site (first powered by Graphite) has been up for a little over a year (including the development phase; you can check the archives), and it's already amassed 8600+ hits.

Word Usage in the UK?

From this article [bbc.co.uk]:
The problem was discovered when testers found special paint uarth the fuel filler neck was wearing off too quickly.
I'm just wondering if the term 'ground' in terms of talking about electricity is 'earth' in England.

Windows XP SP2 Slipstreamed

I slipstreamed SP2 into my XP install CD yesterday. It doesn't seem to install properly; The boot/splash screen says "Microsoft Windows XP" without the usual "Professional" or "Home" display under it, and there's no copyright year either. It's really strange.
I'm going to have to download the service pack again, since I didn't back it up. Oh well.

Windows XP Service 2 Program Conflicts

List of known programs [microsoft.com] that Service Pack 2 for Windows XP breaks.

I'm wondering if some of those were intentional. There's a lot of anti-virus and firewall software on that list, many which are free. Could Microsoft be pushing its own agenda here? It's not like it never happened before...

One of the interesting programs that breaks is Style XP. For those of you who don't know, Style XP is a program that allows custom Windows skins to be used in Windows XP and higher versions. I guess Microsoft finally found a nice excuse to conveniently break the program (as the 3rd party skins aren't endorsed by Microsoft). Seriously, though, Luna is pretty ugly.

Video Editing... STILL

Geez. What a waste of my time.
On Saturday, I finished RC4 of the project. My dad complained about the order of the pictures, so I told him how to adjust the order in Premiere and let him do it. It took him 3+ hours (during which I couldn't use my computer) to finish it. There were also two edits to the existing videos. So, before we went to Amy's house, I exported that version into RC4.

On Sunday, my mom says, "Hey, it'd be great if you could add these two scenes into the video." WTF? I already had RC4 done, and they didn't even look at it yet and were already making suggestions. Before, my mom was like, "Let's try to finish the video this (the one that just went by) weekend." Now, it's "Let's finish the video tonight (Monday) so you can start preparing to go to school tomorrow." When do I get time to work on my website?!! This is going to be the last version. RC5 will be the final one. I'm not doing this anymore. >:O:mad:

ACV Custom Scrollbars

I've added custom scrollbars to the Vectorspace project. I haven't finished them, but I need to know how well it scrolls on different computers. It seems kind of choppy and slow on mine.

So, this is what I hope you'll take the time to do:
First, open up the scrollbar test page [danwa.net].
Then, drag the gray block up and down. This is the block that's initially in the top right of the 'content' block. I think I'm going to change its color to red so it's easier to see.
Tell me how well it scrolls, and preferably your browser and version.

GAIM 0.81 Release

I upgraded to 0.81 earlier today, and there's one thing that I really dislike: the 'raise window on event' has changed... it now also focuses the window. Because of this, I'm downgrading to 0.80 until I can change the behavior.

Windows XP Starter Edition

Slashdot Article [slashdot.org]

I think just about everyone (except maybe people at Redmond) agrees that this OS/release is a joke.

Some confirmed facts about XPSE:
1. Only three applications can run at once.
2. All users will share the same desktop.
3. Networking is crippled.

Unconfirmed:
1. Screen resolution is capped at 800x600

Who would want to use that? I don't think this will help with any of Microsoft's concerns, especially security or piracy. If anything, it'll increase piracy, as people who get XPSE will most likely all immediately install a full version of XP. And for security, it'll only be able to run 3 different worms, viruses, and/or trojans at once.

The good side, though, is no one would pirate XPSE. I want a copy, if only to laugh at.

I wonder what the minimum system requirements are. I could probably run it comfortably on Valence. Hmm, maybe not. It's already running Linux comfortably.

Question of the Day

My dad wakes me up this morning at 9:00 and asks me, "How do you tell if your processor is 64-bit?" I told him, "Google it" and went back to sleep.

Seriously, though. What kind of question is that, this early in the morning?

Anomaly Concept Vectorspace

I'm already on revision 3 of the 'Vectorspace' named site. This one I really like. The previous two were decent, but still kinda sucked.

I'm running into a problem, though. I need to figure out how to load all of the content, and try to do so without refreshing the page. I might drop the XHTML version down to XHTML 1.0 Transitional and use iframes... But that's a very last resort. I'm going to try to do a JavaScript method with a non-JS fall back that works transparently. Hopefully I can get it to work :crosses fingers:.

Introducing Netscape Internet Service

And exactly, from where, did this come from?

Evidently Netscape now has an internet service. It's "as low as $9.95 per month". But seriously, where and when did Netscape become an ISP? I don't want to install it, but I'm just wondering if they install and/or force you to use Netscape as the primary browser. There's a reason why it started to suck after NN6...

Anyway, the video is almost done. I created RC2 today, and found that there was an extra scene in there, and one of the chapters was in the wrong place. Also, the Intro quality sucks; I used a different codec last time; I'm re-exporting it now. Too bad I can't not compress it; it cuts of the data size after 4GB, and the video is all screwed up.

My sister comes home today. We're going to go pick her up in a little bit.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 RTM

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has been released to manufacturers. Evidently there's a BitTorrent floating around, too.

Seriously, though. There were numerous stories on Slashdot about how 3 out of 5 computers failed to come back up from the patching. I hope they fixed all of these bugs.

Commenter on Slashdot also mentions that SP2 has been recompiled with Visual C++ 2005. Evidently SP1 and below were compiled with VC6.

Project Valence

This site is now being powered by Project Valence. Tell me what you think.

Project Valence

Ok, I've updated the site backend to the successor to [G] Graphite, also known as Project Valence. There are still some issues that need to be worked out, including styling for private messages and comments. Private messages also need to be opened in a new window. I will fix those later.

I've spent the past hour or so fixing up the archives. They should be application/xhtml+xml compliant. I would suggest all visitors use a browser that supports this MIME type as well as CSS2. The latter isn't that important, but might be soon. Hint: Use Firefox [mozilla.org].:confident:

I'll post more about the new features later. If you happen to go through the archives and find something that's broken or looks broken, send me a PM (or leave a tag) about it. Please include the post title (or if there isn't one, adjacent titles) and a description of the problem. In most cases, a simple 'open up for edit' and a 'submit' without changing any code fixes it. I love my code.

Archives

Wow. I have all of the data all the way from Anomaly Concept 1.0 (that orange layout). I dumped all of it out and deleted the tables. I'm wondering if I should turn it all into archives and post it on here... There's seriously a lot of it. And, I've used at least two different CMS's (including an earlier version of this one), so the data structure is all different, too. Not only that, but I'd have to import the comments too, and make sure they're tied to their respective posts... I might do this later. But for now, I'm going to aim for retaining all of the [G]-based stuff, which should start from about a year ago. There's also the portion from Blogger...

ATB - Autumn Leaves

I woke under cover of darkness
looked up into the television sky
tonight

I wandered through the city alone this
rain wouldn't stop I couldn't dry my eyes
i cried

who is the one to blame
why is it that you never say
...when the feeling leaves
...if you're through with me

as I'm walking through the rain
cold tears falling down my face
...like the autumn leaves
...on windy day

I went out to the edge of town
over bright highways where the traffic was the only sound
around

while my eyes were looking at the ground
I could see pictures of you floating all around
I didn't doubt

Anomaly Concept 2.0 is Back!

If you can read this message, Anomaly Concept 2.0 is back. Many thanks to the Danwa.net admins (Voh and Wolfensteijn) for restoring this site. I know they've been busy. Anyway, I've been working on a update/new codebase to power my site. It's called "Project Valence", and it's nearly finished. I spent a couple hours getting the emoticons to work. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the codebase, though. I might end up using it for this site. I don't know if I'm going to make a new layout/design or keep this one, though. It's scheduled to be released sometime in September or before.
