Linux From Scratch

Hope everyone had a wonderful break thus far. I know I did.

I wasted the better part of today doing Linux From Scratch. I was using the testing version, and I had a problem with glibc and everything stopped working. *sigh* I don't know if I'll try it again yet. It's really frustrating, especially since I got almost all the way through chapter 6 and it stops working.

Maybe I'll just mirror my current install onto the partition and test the newest Xorg and GNOME 2.8. I've wanted to do that.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

I just played about 3 hours of ping pong. I feel like I'm going to throw up. :puke: Maybe it's the sour altoids.

For Xine: replace above with "Merry Xinemas!"

Whispers of Winter

I'm currently making a new layout for the holidays entitled 'Whispers of Winter'. A semi-live version of it can be found here [danwa.net].
Tell me what you think about it. Comments should still work (untested) on the semi-live page, but if they don't, just post from here. Please attach all comments related to Whispers of Winter to this post. It will be flagged 'sticky' for your convenience.

Google Suggest (Beta)

I know this isn't much of an entry, but I'm working on a new layout that will possibly be finished on Xinemas.

In the meantime, check out Google Suggest. It's like an auto-completion feature (that I know a lot of people turned off in their browsers). I know I've tried to do this before, but have failed miserably.

Need For Speed Underground 2

Finished.

I have some nice high-quality (as high as my card can handle) screenshots of some cars. I might use them later on. Did you know the Skyline is better than the Evolution VIII with all the upgrades? The acceleration, top speed, and handling is better. I haven't compared it to a fully upgraded Miata, though. For some reason I still prefer driving the Miata I have than any of the other cars.

Anjuta Compilation

So I'm compiling Anjuta, which evidently is a C/C++ IDE. In the installation procedure, it gives this message:
[Number of files to be scanned: 147]
[...........................................................................]
[. Generating System tags. This may take several minutes (1 min to 20 mins}.]
[. You can go out, have a coffee and return back in 20 mins.]...............]
[...........................................................................]
Thought it'd be interesting to share.

I got the digital camera (Canon PowerShot S230) to talk to my computer. The 'gtkam' program isn't all that stable, but I suspect it's due to switching between the different folders on the camera before it finishes downloading all the thumbnails and stuff...

Oh well. It's a cold Sunday afternoon and I'm compiling programs. Go me.

Winter Break

I probably should have mentioned that I am on winter break now, and that I have safely arrived at home.

I don't know if I'll be updating this much over break, but just in case I don't, have a happy/merry/wonderful/safe __(insert holiday name here)__ and a happy/merry/wonderful/safe new year!

(If anyone from Purdue knows when we start classes again, please tell me. It would be greatly appreciated.)

Exams

Done with PHYS261 and ECE201. MA266 is coming up in 2 hours.

Just think, though. By this time on Friday, I'll be done. I feel sorry for everyone that has Saturday exams, especially those that have 6 total exams and ones on Saturday (Lara). Everyone do your best on your remaining exams!

Revised Grading Scale

This is the new grading scale, being revised for engineering:
A is for accrediation,
B is for bachelors',
C is for credit,
D is for diploma,
and
F is for five-year plan.

Rodney and I came up with this senior year of high school. It is only fitting to post this during exam week.

Final Exam Week

Finals are just around the corner, and there's an orchestra concert today. Isn't that wonderful?

I will probably be going home sometime on Saturday as opposed to Friday, since my last exam is on Friday. No word on transportation back, yet. I'm still arranging something with Ben.

I'll write a post later for Sean and Benton, as they will not be returning to Purdue next semester. I know we will all miss them very much.

One Year Ago...

Around this time (dead week) last year, what were Ed and Roy (and the rest of us) doing? Counter-Strike.

This year, what are Ed and Roy (and not the rest of us) doing? Counter-Strike: Source.

My, times have changed.

Multiple Browser Window Hijacking

Secunia Research published a vulnerability where one website can hijack remote windows opened from that page. The possibilities for this to cause damage is moderately high. It only takes one good social engineer/phisher to do so. The demonstration is here [secunia.com].

Upon reading the article, I had a pretty good idea on how it was done. Lo and behold, upon reading the source, I was correct.

China bans game that 'threatens its sovereign

According to this article [msn.com], China is banning the game "Soccer Manager 2005" because it recognizes Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Tibet as independent countries. I can understand why, but I think they can all be considered independent, if not sovereign countries.

Just when you thought it was over...

Congratulations to Xine on her PSAT scores!! ^_^

Ninety-ninth percentile and all that.

AoE Night

Ok, so last night we played AoE again. It was a rather short game compared to what we used to have. I think that can be attributed to the fact that I went Saracens, which had the anti-cavalry, and all the other team did was build cavalry. We also nearly took out one of their players early on in the game. A lot of it was Ed and Rick being able to hold the northern front. Because of that, Roy and I were able to push the bottom line up and pretty much win the game. Quote of the day yesterday resulted from this game.

It's Tuesday of dead week, and there's so much to do. Physics is the first final I have on Monday.

First time this semester...

Heat waaave! Tomorrow has a high of 57. I seem to recall this happening sometime last year, too.

Massive 8-player AoE game last night. Koreans are a really good support race. Their seige unites are very useful, especially when one of your allies focuses on infantry and cavalry. That's probably the last time we'll play this semester. Good game, guys.

Badminton on a Saturday Night

Badminton from 7:30 to 10:00. On our way back, some girls in Meredith shouted out their window asking us if we wanted some cookies. Chocolate cookies with some sort of candy in them (red and white). Decently good, but I'm still not a fan of cookies. Methinks the other 5 are.

Half-Life 2 Finished

I finished Half-Life 2 last night. The ending leaves a little to be desired, but also leaves it open for Half-Life 3. Good game, I would say. I enjoyed it a lot.

I still suck at AoE, though. Oh well.

Half-Life 2

I think I have 2 more chapters left in Half-Life 2. I just started the one entitled 'Follow Freeman!'. It's a really good game; the graphics are nice, even when I play them on my computer. Valve really did a good job with it.

I'll probably be through with it by the end of this weekend.

Project Collage

Yesterday during ECE201 I thought of a new project. It's a bulletin board/corkboard/collage (hence project name) type web page where people can leave little notes or whatever they want on it. Each 'note' will be draggable, and it will save user settings (via cookie, probably), so user A could arrange it to his/her preference and user B could do the same, and each would have his own layout. I know theoretically how to do this; it's just a matter of implementing it. There's going to be some heavy JavaScripting going on... =(

Building from Source

There's nothing like compiling something (yesterday's case was SoundJuicer, today's is Stepmania) from source and finding out that a bunch of dependencies aren't there. Then, imagine finding out that you need to build some other things in order to configure those dependencies...

Needless to say, ./configure;make;make install works just fine. (Except for one library, but an older version worked just as well.)

Site Update

I think I should probably finish Project Valence (or at least, fix the admin section and some functionality) as well as make a new layout. I'll go for the layout first. This current one is a bit... awkward.
